Karen Goulding

Partner - Private Client, Wills and Probate

Karen joined Steed & Steed in May 2002 and was admitted to the partnership in 2010.

She began her legal career in Cape Town, South Africa where she specialised in the field of private client law, in particular wills and probate. In 2002, Karen relocated to England and joined Steed & Steed. She studied law in England at the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and became a Fellow of the Institute in 2007.

Karen has more than 20 years experience in South Africa and England and has handled a large variety of matters in the area of private client work with a particular emphasis on probate.

In the field of probate, she regularly advises a wide range of executors and administrators of both straightforward and complex estates on their duties and obligations under the law.

She helps them navigate through the process of administering an estate, from valuing the estate for inheritance tax purposes to producing and submitting inheritance tax accounts to HMRC and applying for a grant of probate. Upon receipt of the grant, she helps with the subsequent gathering in of assets, settling of liabilities and distribution of the estate to the beneficiaries.

The matters that Karen handles often incorporate both national and international aspects, and she regularly deals with the estates of high net-worth individuals with agricultural and business assets.

Karen also has broad experience assisting clients with Lasting Powers of Attorney (property and financial affairs and health and welfare), drafting wills and advising on associated matters, such as guardianship of minors, property trusts, inheritance tax, care home fees and legacies.
