Sheila Lawson

FCILEx - Private Client, Wills and Probate

Sheila joined Steed & Steed in 2003. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives in the firm’s Private Client Department.

Sheila's practice focuses on all aspects of private client work and in the course of her career, she has handled a wide range of matters in the field. She advises clients on Lasting Powers of Attorney (Property and Financial Affairs and Health and Welfare). Sheila also deals with Deputyship applications to the Court of Protection.  These are necessary where someone has not made an Enduring Power of Attorney or Lasting Power of Attorney and they have become physically or mentally incapable of managing their own financial affairs.  These applications are usually made by close relatives but also by local authority Social Services where there is no one willing or able to do so.

Sheila meets with  clients to discuss their requirements for  their Wills and advises them on a wide range of matters that may influence how a will is drafted, including  inheritance tax, guardianship of a minor, care home fees and safeguarding assets for first or subsequent families.

In the area of probate, Sheila guides and advises clients through the steps of administering an estate, including intestate estates (where there is no valid Will).  This includes valuing the estate  and preparing and submitting inheritance tax accounts to HMRC (where necessary), applying for a grant of probate or letters of administration, gathering in of assets, settling of liabilities, preparing the estate accounts and distributing the estate to the beneficiaries.
